FAQ: What Depth / Type of Cup Do I Need?

Our universal 20mm solid keyhole cups (white or black) are our most popular option. They’re economical, durable, and the standard depth for both home arenas and most shows.

For added safety, we recommend pairing your cups with safety releases. These allow the cup to release downward under 135kg of pressure—improving horse and rider safety while also helping prevent damage to your equipment.

Hunter/Jumper

Before purchasing, please review the current Equestrian Canada Rules – Section G (Hunter, Jumper, Equitation & Hack). Certain obstacles require specific hardware, including situations where 18mm safety cups and safety releases are mandatory.

Eventing

Please check the latest Equestrian Canada Rules – Section D (Eventing). Some obstacles require 25mm safety cups, and it’s important to ensure your gear meets those standards.

Hot Tip:
Use CTRL + F (PC) or COMMAND + F (Mac) to quickly search the rulebook for “cup”. It will take you directly to the sections you need to review.

How do I know if a safety release cup is FEI Certified?

FEI-certified safety release cups are always branded by the manufacturer and must come from a manufacturer listed on the current FEI Approved Breakaway Cup Manufacturers List. You can find the most up-to-date list on FEI’s website here.

Important Note:
Solid keyhole cups are not safety release cups. A safety release backing is required for a cup to qualify as a Safety Cup. Keyhole cups and tracks are required for certain competition applications, so please refer to the EC Rules above for the correct usage.
