How to Set Up Your Dressage Arena Training Kit

Setting up your Dressage Arena is quick and straightforward. These lightweight, clip-together kits are designed for easy training use—so light and easy to set! Whether you're using the 20x40m or 20x60m version, this “dot to dot” style gives you clear markers without the bulk of a full surround. Here's what you need to get started.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 stakes or markers (wing weights are great if you are working alone!)
  • 2 measuring tapes (ideally one 60m and one 30m)
  • Arena layout diagram with letter placement
  • A second person to help (optional, but it makes things easier!)

Step 1: Clip the Brackets onto the Boards

Lay each board on a flat, firm surface and press the brackets on with the heel of your hand. Each board gets three brackets—one on each end and one in the middle.

Step 2: Pick Your Spot

Choose a flat, open space that’s free of holes, rocks, or obstacles. Use your 60m tape to lay out the basic footprint of the arena.

Step 3: Square Your First Corner

Place your first stake to mark a starting corner.
Measure 15m down the long side and mark it.
Measure 20m across the short side and mark that.
Use a diagonal measurement of 25m to square the corner.

Step 4: Mark the Remaining Corners

From your first corner, measure 40m or 60m (depending on arena size) along the long side to mark the third corner.

Check your diagonal from the second to third corner:

  • 44.72m for a 20x40m
  • 63.25m for a 20x60m

To find the final corner, use intersecting tape measurements:

  • 20m from the third corner
  • 40m or 60m from the second

Step 5: Place Brackets and Boards

Use your tape lines as a guide and start by placing your boards at the corners, then letters:

  • H, M, F, and K (plus V and R for 60m arenas) go 6m in from the short ends

Letter spacing:

  • 14m for a 20x40m
  • 12m for a 20x60m
  • Make sure to double check your distances.

Step 6: Place Filler Boards

Refer to your layout diagram for exact placement.

That’s It!
Once everything’s in place, you’re good to go. Your arena is now set up and ready for training.
